Unmasking Aidana

A Kazakh Scammer Story

On August 23, 2023, I uncovered a scam involving a person pretending to be a Kazakh girl named Aidana. This is a true story aimed at raising awareness about online fraud.

It began when my friend Laura asked for help with an issue while selling items on OLX, a platform similar to eBay but for Kazakhstan. Laura listed her items for sale, and Aidana, claiming to live in Karaganda, expressed interest in buying them. Aidana promised to send a courier for pickup and offered to cover the cost.

Aidana then sent Laura a payment note with a link to complete a form. When Laura struggled to open the link, she turned to me for assistance. The link requested sensitive bank information, including CVV codes and account balances. Alarmed, I advised caution. However, Aidana reassured Laura, claiming it was for KazPost card registration and even provided an ID card screenshot to build trust.

Believing it was safe, Laura insisted on proceeding, noting her card had only a few cents. After filling out the form, a new request appeared, asking for a card from a different bank due to "technical issues." At this point, I confirmed it was a scam. I urged Laura to block her card immediately and cease contact with the supposed buyer.

Key Takeaways

  • Always verify links before providing sensitive information.

  • Be cautious of overly accommodating buyers offering couriers or extra payments.

  • Trust your instincts when something feels off.

This scam likely originated from Moscow, Russia. While the names in this story have been changed for privacy, the incident is real. Stay vigilant to protect yourself from similar schemes.
